Sridevi  is an Indian film actress who has worked in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and a few Kannada films. Starting to act at the age of four, she made her debut as an adult in the late 1970s. She is regarded as one of the greatest and most popular actresses of Hindi Cinema. She is also often cited as "The First Female Superstar of the Indian Cinema". After establishing herself as one of the leading actresses of Hindi cinema, she left the industry in 1997 to raise her children. During her career, she has won four Filmfare Awards—two for Hindi films, and one each for Tamil and Telugu films. Sridevi is often cited by film media as one of the best actresses of Indian Cinema.
Sridevi started her career as a child artist in the Tamil language film Kandan Karunai (1969) and continued to act as a child artist in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films. She made her Bollywood debut as a child artist in the hit Julie (1975) and played her first adult role in Moondru Mudichu (1976). Sridevi quickly established herself as the top actress of the South Indian industry with films like 16 Vayathinile (1977), Sigappu Rojakkal (1978), Varumayin Niram Sivappu (1980), Meendum Kokila (1981) and Moondram Pirai (1982). However, Sridevi's main success came as a Bollywood actress with award-winning critically acclaimed roles in commercially successful films including Sadma (1983), Nagina (1986), Mr. India (1987), Chandni (1989), ChaalBaaz (1989), Lamhe (1991), Khuda Gawah (1992) and Judaai (1997). Her performances in such films established her as the leading actress of the industry during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Sridevi was born to Ayyapan and Rajeswari on 13 August 1963 in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. Her father was a lawyer. She has a sister and two step brothers.[citation needed] Sridevi married Boney Kapoor, a film producer and the elder brother of actors Anil Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor, in 1996. They have two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi (Krishna). Her mother tongue is Tamil.
Sridevi started her career as a child actor in the 1967 Tamil movie Kandan Karunai playing the role of young Muruga, and acted in many Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam movies from then on. During her early teens, she acted in a number of Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam movies as a lead actress. In 1975, Sridevi debuted in Hindi cinema with a child role in Julie, where she played the role of younger sister to actress Lakshmi.
1976–1982: Breakthrough in South
In 1976, Sridevi got her first big break as heroine in the Tamil industry with K. Balachander's film Moondru Mudichu, where she starred opposite rising stars, Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. The film became a huge hit and Sridevi followed with a succession of blockbuster films with both Haasan and Rajnikanth in the Tamil industry.
Sridevi's first release of 1977 was Gayathri followed by Kavikkuyil and the superhit 16 Vayathinile starring opposite Kamal Haasan and Rajnikanth. She played the role of a young girl who is caught between her two lovers. The movie was a huge success earning $1 million at the box office. The movie proved to be a major breakthrough in her career. Sridevi starred opposite Chandra Mohan in the movie's Telugu remake Padaharella Vayasu in 1978.
Sridevi continued to rise as a leading actress of the Tamil industry with Bharathi Raja's Sigappu Rojakkal opposite Kamal Haasan. She next starred in SP. Muthuraman's Priya opposite Rajnikanth. In 1979, Sridevi debuted as an adult in Bollywood with Solva Sawan opposite Amol Palekar. The film was the remake of her own film 16 Vayathinile (1977) although the film failed commercially.
In 1979, Sridevi had only one successful release with Karthika Deepam. In 1980, Sridevi appeared in the hit movie Johnny opposite Rajnikanth. Later that year, she was paired with Kamal Haasan in K. Balachander's Varumayin Niram Sivappu, which turned out to be a hit at the box office. With her string of successful movies at the box office, Sridevi established herself as the top actress in the Tamil industry as well as also making a name in Telugu films.
In 1981, Sridevi continued to rise as an actress with Aakali Rajyam opposite Kamal Haasan. Aakali Rajyam became a super hit movie at the box office. It was the Telugu remake of Varumayin Niram Sivappu. Later that year, she starred opposite Kamal Haasan in the Tamil film Meendum Kokila, for which she earned critical acclaim and won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress–Tamil.
In 1982, Sridevi starred in the superhit Moondram Pirai opposite Kamal Haasan. She received critical acclaim for her performance as a mentally deranged childlike woman from a brothel who is rescued by a schoolteacher and is looked after by him in his hillside home.
Her second Hindi film Himmatwala (1983) became a big success and established Sridevi as a movie star in Hindi Cinema. The songs and trademark Southern style dances in the film became a rage as did her pairing with Jeetendra. The duo went on to star in several hits like Tohfa, Mawaali and Justice Chowdhry. While these films brought Sridevi commercial success, she earned critical acclaim for her celebrated performance in the 1983 film Sadma. Her portrayal of a young girl suffering from amnesia won her the first Filmfare nomination for Best Actress.
In 1986 came the fantasy Nagina featuring Sridevi as a female snake who could take the form of a woman at will. The film went on to become the years biggest hit, catapulting Sridevi to superstar status. It proved her capacity to carry a film on her shoulders while the climax song remains one of the most famous snake dances of Bollywood. Sridevi was especially lauded for her capability to emote and express during a dance sequence. She featured in many more big budget hits in 1986 like Karma and Aakhree Raasta cementing her status. Shekhar Kapur's 1987 hit Mr. India further consolidated Sridevi's position as the top female star.
Sridevi had now reached a position where scripts were being written with her as the central character. Her title role in Yash Chopra's super-hit Chandni reaffirmed her position as the topmost star of the eighties. The same year she delivered another hit in Chaalbaaz. Her portrayal of twin sisters won her the first Filmfare Best Actress Award of her career. The performance was ranked fourth in Filmfare magazine's list of 80 Iconic Performances of Hindi Cinema. She also appeared in Nigahen: Nagina Part II which was a sequel to Nagina becoming the first Hindi actress to have her own film franchise.
1990sYash Chopra repeated her in his most ambitious film Lamhe in 1991. While this inter-generational love story failed at the box-office, the film is today regarded as a classic. It won the Filmfare Best Film Award while Sridevi's double role as mother and daughter won her the second Filmfare Best Actress Award. The film was a success in the overseas market winning Sridevi much international acclaim. In 1992, Sridevi was paired with Amitabh Bachchan in the Afghanistan epic Khuda Gawah. Her larger than life double role won her another Filmfare nomination. The same year, her Telugu film Kshana Kshanam directed by Ram Gopal Verma, became a big hit and Sridevi won the Filmfare Telugu Best Actress Award and the Nandi Best Actress Award for her role as the hilarious victim of a heist gone wrong.
Despite the big budget disaster Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja in 1993, Sridevi continued to remain an in-demand star and delivered a skilled performance in Mahesh Bhatt's Gumrah. Her role of a helpless victim framed for drug trafficking brought her a Filmfare nomination. In 1994, she appeared in Laadla as an arrogant industrialist. The film was a modest success, winning her another nomination for Best Actress. Her last major release was Judaai in 1997. Her role of a materialistic housewife who sells off her husband to another woman won her the eighth Filmfare nomination for Best Actress.
At the same time, Sridevi started acting in Telugu movies, a number of which were made by K. Raghavendra Rao. With N. T. Rama Rao, she acted in movies such as Konda Veeti Simham, Vetagadu, Sardar Paparayudu and Bobbili Puli. With A. Nageswara Rao, she appeared in movies such as Mudulla Koduku, Premabhishekham, Bangaru Kanku and Premakanuka. With Krishna, she acted in movies such as Kanchu Kagada, Kalavari Samsaram, Krishnavatharam, Burripalem Bolludu and Khaidi Rudrayya. She acted in more than 30 films with Telugu actor Krishna. With Chiranjeevi, she acted in movies such as Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari and S.P.Parasuram. With Nagarjuna, she appeared in movies Aakhari Poratam, Govinda Govinda, and with Venkatesh, she acted in Kshana Kshanam.
